Wambugu Apple is led by Matthew Njenga and processes fruit products for the Kenyan market. Apples are a key input, but local supply is limited and mostly imported. To address this, Wambugu Apple has developed a smallholder farming model that can significantly increase rural incomes while building a local apple supply chain.
The model, known as TBT (10m x 10m), enables farmers to grow 20 apple trees on a small plot of land. Once mature, the trees can generate meaningful, reliable income for smallholder families. Wambugu Apple supplies seedlings, training, and a guaranteed off-take agreement to purchase all apples produced.
Financing is provided through Adifa Limited, led by Shadrack Mutungu, which supports groups of farmers with interest-free loans to cover initial costs. Loans are repaid collectively, strengthening accountability and sustainability.
ProSeed is supporting the pilot phase by funding a revolving pool of capital that can be recycled as loans are repaid. If successful, this model has the potential to become self-financing while delivering long-term income growth for smallholder farmers in rural Kenya.
