TEWA was established in 2010 in Vipingo, north of Mombasa, to help highly disadvantaged young women gain the skills needed to enter the hospitality industry. Many participants have little or no secondary education.
TEWA trains three cohorts each year, with nationally accredited courses combining classroom learning, industry placements, and formal exams. All training is fully donor funded, removing financial barriers for women who would otherwise have no access to vocational education.
Founded with the support of the Kianda Foundation, TEWA is now also supported by organisations such as Schools4Life, which introduced the programme to ProSeed. Our grant supports 10% of TEWA’s annual intake.
Graduates are highly regarded by employers, with leading resorts actively recruiting TEWA-trained staff. As tourism along Kenya’s coast recovers and expands, TEWA is playing an important role in linking vulnerable women to stable employment and long-term economic independence.
